Austin area students raise awareness for teen domestic violence

Students in Austin-area high schools are doing their best in order to raise awareness for teen dating violence throughout the month of February.

Six area school districts including Austin, Eanes, Pflugerville, Manor, Lake Travis, Del Valle, will be participating in the awareness program during the month.

Athletes at these schools will be wearing purple shoe laces this month at their sporting events in order to promote the initiative to end teen dating violence.

According to statistics released by the Texas Advocacy Project, nearly one out of every five teens in a serious relationship has been pushed, slapped or hit by their partner.

“Domestic violence is practically an epidemic,” said. Heather Bellino, the development and communications director for the Texas Advocacy Project. The initiative is aimed to raise awareness for this large issue in order to prevent it from happening.
