U.S. military bases under investigation for sexual assault cases

The Associated Press has been investigating incidences of sexual assault on U.S. military bases. The AP’s findings revealed that military punishments do not match the severity of the sexual assault crimes.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is spearheading the initiative to collect documentation from the Department of Defense. The bases under the Associated Press investigation are Camp Pendleton in California, the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, Fort Hood in Texas, and the Naval Station in Virginia.

Based on collected internal military records starting in 2009, the AP’s investigation, revealed that problematic sexual abuse cases in the military are often resolved by sentencing the perpetrator with an arbitrary punishment.
