Discussion over creating sobriety centers in Travis County

On Tuesday, March 11 in Travis County Commissioners Court, a request was made to create sobriety centers. Sobriety centers would act as a shelter for intoxicated people apprehended by police, and hopefully reduce public intoxication arrests.

Public intoxication arrests comprise ten percent of all Travis County arrests. Decreasing public intoxication arrests would effectively save the police department money. The Austin Police Department has arrested 27,000 people for public intoxication over the last five years. Each of these arrests costs the police department about $97.

Juveniles can face serious consequences for possession of alcohol and controlled substances as well as public intoxication. Minors who have been caught in possession, should be represented by a skilled defense attorney to optimize legal outcomes. The attorneys at the Law Offices of Mark T.
