What is Statutory Rape?

Statutory rape is the crime associated with sexual intercourse involving a minor. This term has no legal meaning in many jurisdictions, so statutory rape is merely a generic way of making the distinction between adult-on-adult rape, and adult-on-minor rape. Often crimes involving minors are more harshly punished in the legal system than other crimes. Depending upon the circumstances of a particular case and the presence or absence of other aggravating factors, the judge or jury may be disinclined to severely punish a defendant, or they could choose to make an example of someone.

Clearly, there is no room for assumptions about how your case will be evaluated by a judge or jury, and your freedom and reputation are simply too valuable to leave to chance. If you have been accused of statutory rape, you need vigorous and competent criminal defense representation. Contact the Dallas statutory rape attorneys of the Law Offices of Mark T.
